Description

Private Networks and Open RAN (O-RAN, ORAN)

You will mostly study two things in this course:

1) Develop a thorough understanding of Open RAN concepts, topologies, interfaces, and details.

2/Learn how to create 4G and 5G networks using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and open-source Open RAN software.

This course is for you if you want to learn how to build private 4G/5G networks or build practical and fully open telecom equipment, software programs, and end-to-end 4G/5G systems that are alternative and competitive to those produced by traditional telecom companies such as Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, Ericsson, ZTE, and others. This course will go over in-depth most of the technical parts of building end-to-end 4G and 5G systems, such as eNodeB/gNodeB, UE, and EPC/5GC.

Private networks have evolved from lab toys to a multi-billion dollar business, according to everyone (see: here, here, and here). Open source has already exited the lab, with solutions like RedHat, OpenStack, the O-RAN Alliance, and the Telecom Infra Project gaining traction in operators’ networks throughout the world. The industry is reacting by creating open source solutions that go up the stack as the footprint of open source develops and network operators recognize the advantages of implementing open source.

The Federal Communications Commission has been pouring gasoline on the open and private network fire. The FCC has made commercially deployable CBRS spectrum accessible, which we witnessed take off in the latest auction and with the launch of Spectrum Access Systems (SASs). CBRS’ 3-tier access implies that anybody may receive a significant part of the airwaves with 25 times (or more) the strength of most Wi-Fi networks, allowing for high-quality wireless services.

As a result of these changes, I’ve changed the aim of this edition of the “Construct Your Own Network How-To” from a lab network to a commercial-grade LTE network deployment. Let’s get going.
